Perception of airport users' on environmental-friendly airport chair design in KLIA

    Get PDF
Malaysia Airport Holding Berhad (MAHB) has taken several measures to spread environmental awareness among the staff and communities. Nevertheless, the awareness appeared to be lacking in the context of eco-design product. Eco-design integrates multifaceted design aspects and reflects the environment concept. Understanding consumers’ needs and desires is imperative in designing environmental-friendly product. As consumers’ expectation plays an important role in developing eco-products, a survey was carried out to evaluate the user’ (passengers) environmental-friendly perception and eco-design attributes on the current airport chair use in KLIA. In KLIA, airport chairs appear to be the significant facility used by the passengers. The results indicated that the most users rated that the existing airport chair did not apply environmental-friendly practices. Users viewed on attributes characteristics for eco-design chair was categorized into physical appearance (i.e.- attraction feelings, design and colour), sensational feeling (i.e.- physical, health, and usability) and physical characteristics (recycle, reusable, eco-material, reduce cost and reduce environmental impact). Based from these findings, this study contributed towards integrating environmental-friendly concept with users’ perception as part to promote sustainable product

    Islamic banking: Operation and instruments

    Get PDF
Since the first modern Islamic savings bank was established in the Egyptian town of Mit Ghamr during the 1960s, and the establishment of Hajj investment fund in Malaysia also in the late 1960s, the Islamic financial system has continued to grow rapidly.Although Islamic banking is the most developed part of Islamic finance, the expansion of the Islamic capital market, encompassing the equity and debt markets, as well as the Islamic money market, cannot be ignored. Despite its rapid expansion, the Islamic financial system is still poorly understood by the Muslim world and continues to be puzzling to most Westerners. The sophisticated and innovative products and services that have been developed in the Islamic financial market are usually perceived as similar to their conventional counterparts; however these products/services are very different in terms of their modus operandi and principles. The Arabic terms associated with products/services are considered jargon to most people. Thus, the need to understand Islamic banking system and to foster an interest in Islamic finances, specifically Islamic banking, have resulted in the writing of this book. This book aims to share this knowledge with readers who are interested in understanding Islamic banking operations and its products and services. It is also hoped that this book will provide assistance to its readers to understand certain aspects of Islamic banking operations and services though the book does not mean to cover comprehensively those topics. This book covers Islamic banking operations by providing an overview about the balance sheets of conventional and Islamic banks. The reader is then exposed to Islamic banking products, both in deposits and financing activities. In the final part of this book, the reader is familiarized with Islamic trade finance products and instruments. We would like to express our highest gratitude and deep appreciation for the assistance and support provided by few individuals and institutions. Among others, the International Shariah Research Academy (ISRA), for providing initial insights; the Islamic Banking and Finance Institute of Malaysia (IBFIM) for providing valuable inputs; and Universiti Utara Malaysia for continuously supports the writers’ efforts to contribute knowledge to the society academically.Hopefully, this book will benefit practitioners, academics, students, the public and those who aspire to follow the development of the Islamic finance industry and its sciences

Why do nonlinearities matter? The repercussions of linear assumptions on the dynamic behaviour of assemble-to-order systems

    Get PDF
The hybrid assembly-to-order (ATO) supply chain, combining make-to-stock and make-to-order (MTS-MTO) production, separated by a customer order decoupling point (CODP), is well recognised in many sectors. Based on the well-established Inventory and Order Based Production Control Systems (the IOBPCS family), we develop a hybrid ATO system dynamics model and analytically study the impact of nonlinearities on its dynamic performance. Nonlinearities play an important, sometimes even a dominant, role in influencing the dynamic performance of supply chain systems. However, most IOBPCS based analytical studies assume supply chain systems are completely linear and thereby greatly limit the applicability of published results, making it difficult to fully explain and describe oscillations caused by internal factors. We address this gap by analytically exploring the non-negative order and capacity constraint nonlinearities present in an ATO system. By adopting nonlinear control engineering and simulation approaches, we reveal that, depending on the mean and amplitude of the demand, the non-negative order and capacity constraints in the ATO system may occur and their significant impact on system dynamics performance should be carefully considered. Failing to monitor non-negative order constraints may underestimate the mean level of inventory and overestimate the inventory recovery speed. Sub-assemblers may suffer increased inventory cost (i.e. the consequence of varying inventory levels and recovery speed) if capacity and non-negative order constraints are not considered at their production site. Future research should consider the optimal trade-off design between CODP inventory and capacity and the exploration of delivery lead-time dynamics

The nexus between rate of return on deposit of Islamic banks and interest rates on deposits of conventional banks in a dual banking system: A cross country study

    Get PDF
The paper investigates the existence of a long-run relationship between conventional interest rates and rates of return on deposit of Islamic banks in the contemporary dual banking systems on a cross-country basis. The study employs ARDL (Autoregressive Distributed Lag) modeling approach to cointegration analysis. The study finds the existence of the long run relationship between rates of return on deposits of Islamic banks and interest rates on deposits of conventional banks during the period 2007 – 2015. The study also finds a bidirectional causal relationship running between rates of return on deposits of Islamic banks and conventional interest rates. The study statistically provides empirical insight into the relationship between the rate of return on deposits of Islamic banks and the conventional interest rate on a cross-country basis using an ARDL model

Procurement and contractual choices for engineer-to-order supply chains

Complex projects are increasingly collaborative, involving ever greater numbers of multiple organisations, while also seeking to deliver high levels of innovation. To gain insight into how supply chain management might be developed to better support these developments, many have looked to high volume manufacturing to benchmark and seek best practice. Outcomes have often fallen short of expectation: in the construction sector, for instance, productivity and adversarial relationships are still a major cause of concern in many countries. While there have been some successes in transferring technologies and supply chain innovation from high volume manufacturing to engineering intensive sectors, such as construction, shipbuilding, machinery and capital goods, the more general narrative is of the difficulties that have arisen. We see these difficulties arising from underlying differences between the between supply chain types, and have developed a body of knowledge for "engineer-to-order" situations to better support such sectors. The procurement process is crucial to establishing conditions for success and is typically a major source of concern for the supply chain. Hence, we summarise the findings of a research project that focused on developing the principles required for procurement excellence and to structure the possible contractual choices in engineer-to-order supply chains
